Every
five minutes, someone somewhere in India attempts suicide,
making suicide, the third major cause of death.
Statistics show that annually more than 1,00,000 people
commit suicide in India. In the year 2009, 14,424 people
in the state of Tamil Nadu committted suicide, of which
Chennai accounts for 1412. SNEHA has been working in
the field of suicide intervention for the past 25 years.
Since its inception in 1986, over 1,50,000 people have
utilised our services.

The
centre is entirely manned by volunteers and runs solely
with the help of public donations. A careful screening
process is undertaken periodically, to select volunteers
from all walks of life. These volunteers are then trained
and equipped with the necessary skills needed to handle
the befriending needs of the caller.
SNEHA is open 24 hours a day for telephone calls and from
8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. for visits every day,
through the year.
There are around 50 volunteers working for SNEHA currently.
The information shared by the callers is held in strict
confidence and the identity of each caller is carefully
protected within the four walls of SNEHA.
